Don't Sell Grandma's Jewelry at a Yard Sale...What's It Worth?
IDENTIFICATION
Before you can find out what a piece of jewelry is worth, you need to find out what it is. This can be as simple as turning it over and finding a maker's mark or complicated as in "hours of research". First thing first: Examine your jewelry for a maker's mark. Look on the back or on the clasp. Thoroughly examine every inch of the piece. If you see a maker's mark, start your research! Not finding a maker's mark doesn't mean it's not valuable, on the contrary; many fine pieces of jewelry were never marked. It does mean you will need to put in a little more effort in research.
If you received your jewelry from a family member, ask them about it's history. Did your grandfather give it to your grandmother right before he went off to war? Was it handed down from her mother? Answers to these questions will give you a general idea of how old it is.
Look at the style of the piece. Although many styles come back into fashion after a time, it is still possible to ID an older piece by the style and material.
Does it appear to have gemstones? Determine it they are real gemstones. You will need some sort of strong magnifying glass or ideally, a jeweler's loupe. A loupe is a small magnifying glass in various degrees of magnification. A 10X loupe should be all you need and they are relatively inexpensive. Craft and hobby stores usually sell them. Go to a well lighted place and look at the stone through the loupe. Do you see tiny bubbles in the stone? Tiny air bubbles mean it is made from glass or plastic. It's not a real gemstone. Is it open backed? Can you see the back of the stone when you turn the piece over? Does the back of the stone look shiny as in gold or silver colored foil? These are foil back rhinestones and not real gems. Foil was often added to reflect the light and create a better sparkle. Most real gems contain some type of natural inclusion. Unless you are familiar with gems and diamonds, your best bet is to take it to a jeweler or appraiser if you think it is real.
Look at the construction of the piece. This can be extremely helpful in dating a piece! Look at the clasp or pin. Are the stones individually riveted on? Is the clasp rather ornate? Does it have a layered look? What type of style is it? Does it remind you of old black and white movies? Perhaps Bette Davis or Katherine Hepburn? Does it look Victorian?
By now, you should have a general idea of age and you are ready to start your research in earnest!
RESEARCH
Head for your local library or heat up an Internet search engine! I can spend hours in my local library poring over books and books and more books. There are plenty of good jewelry reference books. Stop by your library or bookstore and check them out before buying. No sense in buying a book you will hardly use! If you choose the library, bring your jewelry with you. You can also make copies of any pages you wish to take or check out the book and bring it home. As with other research, libraries are extremely helpful. Searching on the Internet is also a quick and easy way to get fast information. Some search terms to try are:
maker's mark
vintage jewelry
the name of the maker's mark you found on your piece
the decade i.e. "1930's jewelry"
antique jewelry
collectible costume jewelry
This will give you hours of research and hundreds of pages to sort. Look at anything relevant, look for similar pieces or styles. Visit online vintage jewelry shops. Look for forums where you may be able to post a picture and ask for identification help.
If you love to research like I do, this is right up your alley! It can take hours, days sometimes weeks to find out about a certain piece. As you go, you will gain more knowledge about old jewelry and hopefully you will be as enchanted as many other collectors and dealers. It's a fascinating world of "junky jewelry"!

Moving Average Convergence Divergence ( MACD ) Charts
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence charts, or MACD charts for short, are a technical indicator that is derived from the more simple moving average.
The MACD charts are oscillating indicators, meaning that they move above and below a centerline or zero point. As with other oscillating and momentum indicators, a very high value indicates that the stock is overbought and will likely drop soon. Conversely, a consistently low value indicates that the stock is oversold and is likely to climb.
THE 12-DAY AND 26-DAY EMAS
The MACD charts are based on 3 exponential moving averages, or EMA. These averages can be of any period, though the most common combination, and the one we will focus on, are the 12-26-9 MACD charts.
There are 2 parts to the MACD. We will focus first on the first part, which is based on the stock's 12-Day and 26-Day EMA. The 12-Day EMA is the faster EMA while the 26-Day is slower.
The logic behind using a faster and slower EMA is that this can be used to gauge momentum. When the faster (in this case 12-Day) EMA is above the slower 26-Day EMA, the stock is in an uptrend, and vice versa. If the 12-Day EMA is increasing much faster than the 26-Day EMA, the uptrend is becoming stronger and more pronounced. Conversely, when the 12-Day EMA starts slowing down, and the 26-Day begins to near it, the stock movement's momentum is beginning to fade, indicating the end of the uptrend.
THE MACD LINE
The MACD charts use these 2 EMA by taking the difference between them and plotting a new line. Very often, this new line is depicted as a thick black line in the middle chart.
When the 12-Day and 26-Day EMA are at the same value, the MACD line is at zero. When the 12-Day EMA is higher than the 26-Day EMA, the MACD line will be in positive territory. The further the 12-Day EMA is from the 26-Day EMA, the further the MACD line is from its centerline or zero value.
THE 9-DAY EMA
This line on its own doesn't tell much more than a moving average. It becomes more useful when we take into account its 9-Day EMA. This is the third value when we talk of 12-26-9 MACD charts. Note that the 9-Day EMA is an EMA of the MACD line, not of the stock price. This EMA (the thin blue line alongside the MACD line) acts like a normal EMA and smoothes the MACD line.
The 9-Day EMA acts as a signal line or trigger line for the MACD. When the MACD line crosses above the 9-Day EMA from below, it indicates that the downtrend is over and a new uptrend is forming. Time to consider bullish strategies. Conversely, when the MACD line drops below its 9-Day EMA, a new downtrend is forming and its time to implement bearish strategies.
THE MACD HISTOGRAM
So far, we have covered the most simple form of interpreting the MACD charts. We now look at the MACD histogram. Just as the MACD line is the difference between the 12-Day and 26-Day EMA, the MACD histogram is basically the difference between the MACD line and its 9-Day EMA.
So when the MACD line crosses above its 9-Day EMA, the MACD histogram will cross above zero. In order words, a bullish signal is obtained when the MACD histogram crosses above zero, and a bearish signal is obtained when it crosses below zero.
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE DIVERGENCE
The MACD histogram forms valleys and peaks. Sometimes, multiple peaks are formed, with each subsequent peak becoming lower and lower. These progressively lower peaks constitue what is known as a negative divergence. A negative divergence on the MACD histogram is an indication that the current uptrend might reverse in the near future. This could happen even though the actual stock price seems to be making higher peaks in the chart. Basically, the MACD histogram negative divergence is a warning that the stock might turn down soon.
Similarly, the positive divergence on the MACD histogram predicts the subsequent uptrend. However, sometimes these divergences can create false alarms. If we follow these signals, we could have bought into a downtrend.
As such, I would like to remind you that individual indicators such as the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) charts should not be used on their own, but rather with one or two additional indicators of different types, in order to confirm any signals and prevent false alarms.

How Much Is Your Popcorn Worth?: Powerful Lessons In Marketing And The Psychology Of Selling - Part 6
Additional Lessons from Popcorn Marketing
I'm assuming that the movie theatres have tested their price point and figured out what the highest price is that they can charge and get away with - the highest price the market will be willing to pay.
And, that's what they charge for their popcorn.
I believe that's a mistake. Here's a better way of doing it:
Test your price point. Find out what the highest price is that the customer is willing to pay for your product. Then, bring the price down considerably! Offer a 'better' deal than your competitors. Or offer them a lot more value than others, by adding additional bonuses to increase the overall perceived value.
Sure, you can take advantage of your customers by charging as much as you possibly can. But, I wouldn't recommend that strategy. Instead, tell them what others are charging and what a great value you're giving them. Break it down for them and explain the difference. Show them how they're unique and why buying from you is in their best interest.
Remember, you can either corner them into buying from you, or you can just make your offer so much better, and so much more irresistible, that they will want to buy from you!
Moreover, I want the customer to feel good 'after' the purchase as well. I'm not a fan of buyer's remorse, and I assume my customers aren't either.
You ensure that they will continue to feel good about their buying decision after the purchase by delivering on your promise. In fact, you can go a step beyond and 'over-deliver.'
When you do that, you will also:
1) Dramatically decrease your refund rate, and
2) Ensure that the customer will buy from you again, in the future, because his first purchase from you was a positive and rewarding experience.
And, besides, the only reason I'm "in business" is because of the 'customer.' Why would I want to cheat him or trick him? We're in this business because we want to help people and create real value in their lives. Not because we want to suck every penny out of them, right?
Most marketers are bad marketers because they think that marketing is about 'tricking' people into giving them money. That's absolutely not true.
If you do it right, they will want to give you the money, and feel good about it. And, you'll be able to sleep well at night.
Marketing is not a one-shot deal. If you try to trick the customer into giving you as much money as possible just so you can get one sale out of him, you're seriously missing out.
Instead, if you make the first buying experience a pleasant one, the customer will continue to buy from you again and again, and will happily give you more money. So, don't forget about your existing customers after they've made that first sale. That's just the beginning of your mutually-beneficial relationship with him.
Well, there you have it… "popcorn marketing" explained, and then some! :-)
There are many extremely powerful marketing strategies and psychological motivators at work in the above 'movie popcorn' scenario.
Remember, just 'knowing' about these strategies and concepts won't do much to increase your profits. Start applying as many of them to your own business as possible, and I guarantee you'll sell more, and sell more often.
In fact, you'll get much better results than the movie theatres ever will, by always keeping the customer's best interest in mind.

Die Cast Sports Collectibles - Heavy Metal Fun
The beginning of the movement for die cast items from racing into the other major sports began in 1989. The Baltimore Orioles wanted to have a unique promotional giveaway for their fans at one of their games. They contacted and did business with a small company in York, PA that many of us know as White Rose Collectibles. White Rose literally "stepped up to the plate" and delivered an existing Matchbox Model A Ford with the Orioles Logo and year printed on the side to given away to fans. This Oriole item, being so unique, was a big hit with fans of all ages. Die cast had now started to become a sport collectible.
Starting in 1990, White Rose began to produce these collectible Model A Ford trucks for all Major League Baseball and NFL teams. Popularity was still a bit unknown so the production run of approximately 10,000 per team was limited to hobby, toy, card and gift stores and was not available to most of the mass retailers. All of these tucks were officially licensed and were available with the appropriate team colors and logos. The year of the model, 1990 in this case, was also printed on the door panels. Printing the year on the vehicles is what made these trucks a true collector's item.
Each year the color scheme would change a bit to keep the items fresh. Then the vehicles themselves began to change to really enhance the collectibility of the product. Again, all models still had the year printed on them and production still remained limited. Since these were still Matchbox models, these also became a "cross over" collectible to main stream Matchbox collectors. The mid 1990's brought the addition of a few of the most popular NBA teams but, there was still nothing for the hockey collector to this point.
That all changed when White Rose got the license to produce mini Zamboni's, the machine that cleans the ice surface at all ice rinks and a machine that has an unusual popularity with hockey fans in general. All NHL collectors now had their item! Even though it was not an official Matchbox item, the Zamboni WAS directly related to the sport and was a HUGE success with fans. As with past items, the official colors and logos were employed in the design as well as, the year of production.
Die cast now had a much bigger presence in the sports collectible marketplace. As years passed, other models and styles were added to the line that included tractor trailers, tandem trailers and helicopters, to name a few. As popularity increased, so did the attention of the bigger sports companies and White Rose was eventually purchased by Fleer, Inc. Fleer continued to add to the line to also include muscle cars, fighter planes and more classic vehicles. A year or so ago, Fleer was bought out by Upper Deck, Inc. which has continued to enhance the die cast line of products. Even though the companies change, the vehicles and production quality continue to improve. All vehicle designs continue to change from year to year but many still have the year printed on them. They all still have a limited production runs to further protect their collectibility.
Racing fans will always be the biggest die cast sports collector's. For this reason, they also have the widest variety of product that ranges in price from a few dollars to limited production vehicles that cost a few hundred dollars. Also, as in other sports, scale models in all sizes are available to satisfy the needs of all collectors. Manufacturers such as Winner's Circle, Revell, and Action (now Motorsports Authentic) keep collectors of all ages and budgets happy. Race cars are continuously updated to reflect changes in sponsors, drivers, color designs and various promotions, such as movies, that keep the racing die cast collections fresh.
In all, it doesn't matter what sport you enjoy or what driver you follow. Die cast collectibles are a fun and unique way to display your support. Limited production runs, variety of vehicles and ever changing designs help protect the value of your collection and yet offer a choice that keeps every collector happy. I doesn't matter if you are in the winners circle or hoisting a World Series trophy, die cast collectibles are heavy metal fun!!!

Amazon.com is a Public Company formed ion the year 1994 by CEO and Chairman Jeff Bezos. It began as an online bookstore but later diversified its products to include computer software, DVDS, VHS, CDS, video games, toys, apparels, food and furniture among others. The Company has been a pioneer in the field of e-commerce and its success was marked last year through its high revenue collection; $ 14.84 billion.
Analysis of the market entry strategy for Amazon.com
Amazon.com is looking towards the introduction of online delivery of books, movies and music. But it has used a toe-in-the-water approach. Here are some of the reasons why the Company could have adopted such a standpoint
Lack of enthusiasm from investors
Although the Company has recorded increased sales, this has not translated into net income. During the year 2005, Amazon.com registered an increase in sales of about twenty six percent yet at the very same time; it recorded a drop in net income of about thirty six percent. In the year 2007, net sales reached an estimated one hundred and forty three billion dollars; however, this was not seen in increase of profits. Part of the reason for this trend could be that any increases in sales generation are only brought about by more spending on the part of the Company. Besides this, internet companies have registered a whooping 1.1 billion dollar revenue in 2005 through the sale of internet downloads. Amazon is still busy with other product offers. This implies that it may not have the time and resources to give full attention to the product. All these activities are keeping Amazon very busy, it is a Company that has received acclamation for its innovative nature and therefore must be very busy with these issues. It is therefore very difficult for the Company to put all its efforts into the development of new services, more so at full capacity. Amazon views the delivery of digital media online as a sort of investment for the future. This is a fair assumption.
Existence of pressure to increase revenue from competitors
In the year 2006, internet Company regulators FASB and SEC reported that there is renewed pressure for internet Companies to recognise less conventional routes of generating revenue such as Barter exchange with partners. The regulators reported that some of the reasons for such behaviour could be that most companies require more financing after short periods of time and most of this financing must be external. In addition, internet companies realise that they need more sources of revenue since some of them offer stock options for their employees when required to give them compensation. This is also backed up by the fact that some companies have registered increased interests by individuals in stocks, they therefore nee to back this up with additional revenue.
The survey also found that most of these internet companies have levels of activity consequently causing burn out levels to increase too. As the Company initially introduces the service, it could monitor a number of economic factors surrounding the service so that it can assess its success and develop ideas to improve it. Amazon.com can conduct a survey of how well a product is doing by looking at its distribution, production and consumption and then deducing whether this is economically viable. It could utilise economic data to assess the prices of the new venture-online shipping against the backdrop of how much consumers are paying for it.
Besides this, it is also possible for Amazon to analyse how the new product is doing in terms of other parameters. It could carry out a comparison between prices of online shipping and levels of employment or other factors such as; preferences, consumption, preferences, buying, selling and value of money. This will enable the Company to come up with a real picture as to the performance of the new product. This ought to be backed up by some changes. They can also ensure that they have adequate financial backing to meet this high demand for online shopping. It should make sure that it respects all patent rights and obligations placed upon it. This can be done by collaborating with studio operators in Hollywood, Publishing Companies and video game producers. It should focus on the most important of these groups; music studios. The Company should make sure that it works hand in hand with all the stakeholders involved in digital media. From Music producers, CEOs of Publishing Companies and other patent holders.
Closely linked to this strategy is the technology strategy. Technology strategy involves coming up with a plan that will denote how information technology will be incorporated in all the parts of the organisation. The approach can also be used together with product adoption pricing. Maybe consumers may feel that a sudden increase in price is unfounded. However, this is a factor that can be solved by adding some value to the product. Amazon.com could improve their online shipping by say increasing its speed and this could be adequate justification for the penetration pricing mentioned earlier. They can be able to increase their prices with the confidence that consumers will not be disgruntled.
Adequate communication with its market
Amazon.com already has a system in place that enables it to correspond to consumers. Normally, consumers send emails to the Company and there are usually respondents available to reply the emails. Amazon.com can make sure that all its consumers' are satisfied through a four stage process. Fist of all, the Company can 'initiate' consumers to the new service of online shipping. It's funny, it's heartfelt, and it's like nothing else in circulation.
Desperate Housewives, ABC: Okay, Desperate Housewives - or DH as it is known in the inner circle - might not be your typical run-of-the-mill comedy: there is no laugh track and few dream sequences. Still, DH is made of up a myriad of characters who work together to make comedic harmony.
